In a significant development, security forces have arrested José Antonio Villatoro, the mayor of Frontera Comalapa, Chiapas. The detainment was announced by the State Attorney General’s Office. Villatoro, who until Sunday was the mayor, is accused of the crime of corruption, along with other serious charges such as forced disappearance of persons, aggravated extortion, and homicide.
The arrest was made on Sunday after extensive investigations and operations conducted in the Sierra region, particularly in Frontera Comalapa. The mayor was apprehended by a joint task force comprising the State Attorney General’s Office, the State Police, and the Rapid Reaction Force Pakal (FRIP).
Simultaneously, Jorge "N" and Juan Manuel "N" were also arrested. Authorities confiscated a Volkswagen Amarok 4×4 vehicle and two rifles, one of .223 calibre and the other of 7.62 calibre, both of which were fully loaded.
The suspected mayor, José Antonio Villatoro, was subsequently transferred to a detention center and is now at the disposal of the judicial authorities.
The State Attorney General’s Office has confirmed that coordinated efforts with the State Security Secretariat will continue in Frontera Comalapa to ensure the security and tranquility of the region’s inhabitants.
Prior to his arrest, Villatoro had taken office as interim mayor on October 8, replacing Aníbal Roblero Castillo, who was kidnapped in Tuxtla on September 3. In a video posted on his social media accounts, Villatoro claimed that on December 29, the Rapid Reaction Force Pakal had entered the municipality to restore peace, guarantee freedom of movement on the roads, and establish order.
The operations in Frontera Comalapa are part of ongoing efforts to combat organized crime and maintain public security in the region.
