NASA’s Earth Observatory has released stunning satellite imagery revealing a remarkable transformation in the Gobi Desert of Inner Mongolia, China. Once a vast expanse of sand, the area is now blanketed by solar panels, marking significant progress in China’s ambitious ‘Solar Great Wall’ project.
The time-lapse imagery shows a friable desert landscape in 2017, which has since been transformed into an ‘ocean’ of solar panels. This dramatic change is part of China’s strategic effort to generate renewable energy on a colossal scale, enough to power its capital, Beijing.
The project, set to span 400 kilometers in length and 5 kilometers in width by 2030, aims to have a maximum power output of 100 gigawatts (GW). This ambitious venture began with the completion of the ‘Horseshoe Bay’ power station in 2019, which currently stands as the world’s largest solar power plant, generating 2 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually, sufficient to meet the energy needs of 30 to 40 people.
The site offers ideal conditions for solar power generation, including abundant sunshine, a flat terrain, and proximity to industrial centers. Furthermore, the implementation of solar panels is expected to have additional benefits, such as preventing sand dune migration, reducing wind speed, and creating shaded zones that facilitate vegetation growth.
China’s commitment to solar energy is evident in its global ranking. According to data from the Global Energy Monitor (GEM), as of June 2024, China’s solar power capacity stands at 38.6875 million megawatts (MW), accounting for approximately 51% of the world’s total, ahead of the United States with 7.9364 million MW (11%).
From 2017 to 2023, China increased its solar power capacity by nearly 4 million MW annually, reflecting its rapid development in renewable energy. During the same period, the United States added around 0.81 million MW of solar power each year.
