China Escalates Trade Tensions with U.S. by Imposing New Export Controls and Bans

In a move that could further strain bilateral relations, China has targeted several prominent U.S. companies, including industry giants Raytheon, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin, with significant commercial restrictions. This comes just weeks before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to impose new tariffs and sanctions on China.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that it had added 28 U.S. companies to its export control list, citing the need to "safeguard national security and interests." These companies will be barred from purchasing so-called "dual-use" items, which have both civilian and military applications. Additionally, 10 companies have been placed on a "unreliable entities" list, preventing them from conducting any business in China or sending executives to reside in the country.

Although the targeted companies have limited operations in China and many already face some restrictions, this latest action marks an expansion in the scope and number of companies affected by Beijing’s countermeasures. "Most of this is likely symbolic," said Andrew Gilholm, a China expert at the consultancy Control Risks, "but what we’re seeing is an increase in the range and number of entities being added to a single list."

The list includes major U.S. defense contractors such as Raytheon Missile Systems, Boeing Defense, Space and Security, and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. As of now, these companies have not responded to requests for comment.

China’s latest actions underscore its determination to protect its economic interests amidst growing U.S. pressure. As the trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies continue to escalate, the global community watches and waits for the new U.S. administration to take office and determine the next steps in this high-stakes diplomatic dance.
