China Reports Five Mpox Cases, Assures Efficient Management of Outbreak

China has identified five cases of the new monkeypox variant, but authorities emphasize that the outbreak is being managed efficiently. This viral infection primarily manifests with high fever and the appearance of skin lesions, known as vesicles. Predominantly present in around 10 African countries since its discovery in the 1970s, the disease has spread globally in 2022, including to developed nations.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the highest level of alert for the monkeypox epidemic in August and renewed it in November, as the number of cases and affected countries continues to rise. China announced it would test individuals entering the country for six months.

However, Chinese health authorities announced on Thursday that they had discovered a cluster of the 1b clade of monkeypox, likely sourced from a traveler from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The virus was isolated in four individuals who had contact with this patient and exhibited mild symptoms, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

"Infected individuals and those at risk are receiving medical treatment and health monitoring, and the cluster has been managed efficiently," the same source added. No other cases have been detected among their contacts so far, the center confirmed, according to Agerpres.
