The study analyzed data from approximately 40,000 American adults who completed an annual health survey between 1999 and 2018. Among other questions, participants were asked about their coffee consumption, including the quantity and timing.

The morning advantage

The researchers divided the participants into three groups: non-coffee drinkers, those who enjoyed a cup in the morning, and individuals who spread their coffee intake throughout the day. By examining deaths within these groups, particularly those attributed to heart and vascular diseases and cancer, they uncovered some intriguing insights.

Reduced risk of early death among morning coffee drinkers

Among the total 4,295 registered deaths, 1,268 were due to heart and vascular diseases, and 934 were attributed to cancer. The study found that morning coffee drinkers had a lower risk of premature death compared to non-coffee drinkers. This association remained significant even after accounting for potentially unhealthy factors like sleep problems, high cholesterol, and smoking.

The study highlighted a particularly promising finding: those who drank coffee in the morning had a 31% lower risk of dying from heart and vascular diseases. No such correlation was found between morning coffee and cancer risk.

Why morning coffee may be beneficial

While more research is needed to confirm these findings and explore the possible reasons behind them, the study offers a few possible explanations. Coffee’s anti-inflammatory properties, which are most potent in the morning, could play a significant role. Many inflammation-promoting substances in the blood follow our biological clock, peaking in the morning and gradually decreasing throughout the day. Therefore, the anti-inflammatory effects of morning coffee may be more pronounced than when consumed later in the day.

Another theory proposes that drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening may interfere with melatonin production during the night. Insufficient melatonin levels can lead to sleeplessness, increased stress, higher blood pressure, and an elevated risk of heart diseases.

How much coffee should you drink in the morning?

Good news for coffee enthusiasts! The study found that drinking either a moderate (two to three cups) or high amount (more than three cups) of coffee in the morning was associated with a lower risk of premature death. Light drinkers (one cup or less) experienced a slightly smaller risk reduction. So, feel free to plan your coffee break a little earlier in the day.

Exploring other factors

Although the study discovered an intriguing link between morning coffee and reduced mortality, more research is needed to determine whether coffee consumption is the primary factor driving this connection. It’s possible that early risers who enjoy coffee share other traits that positively impact their overall health.
