Tragic Accident Claims Woman’s Life After Bus Ignoring Safety Protocol
A horrific and fatal accident has claimed the life of a woman, leaving behind a profound sense of grief among her relatives. The 55-year-old defendant, P.O., a voluntary driver for Cordaan, picked up the victim at a daycare center in Diemen on January 26, 2024. During the incident, P.O. failed to secure the woman in her wheelchair with a safety belt before driving off, a crucial protocol violation that has since led to severe consequences.
In court today, P.O. expressed regret for his oversight, blaming it on a momentary lapse in judgment exacerbated by high winds and an inconvenient location. "I had intended to secure her wheelchair first, as I normally would," he stated, though he admitted to having fastened the safety belts of other passengers and their mobility aids before starting the journey.
The initial part of the trip went smoothly, but disaster struck when P.O. needed to stop at a traffic light. The woman’s wheelchair tipped over, causing her to hit her head on the ground. P.O. stopped at the next intersection to check on her, at which point she reported pain in her wrist and neck. Misjudging the severity of her condition, P.O. proceeded to the Amsterdam Medical Center (AMC), stopping en route to drop off two other passengers.
During the journey, P.O. encountered an ambulance, but its crew was unable to provide assistance as they lacked the necessary diagnostic equipment. After waiting for another ambulance for 25 minutes, P.O. decided to continue to the AMC. Upon arrival, medical professionals discovered that the woman had sustained a traumatic spinal cord injury. Despite their best efforts, they concluded that the quality of her life would be severely compromised if treated, leading her family to opt for end-of-life care. She passed away two days later.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety protocols in preventing such devastating incidents. As the investigation into this case continues, our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends during this difficult time.
