Magnus Cort Nielsen Claims Stage 2 Victory at Volta a Catalunya, Godon Retains Lead

Magnus Cort (Uno-X Mobility) powered to victory on stage 2 of the Volta a Catalunya in Banyoles, holding off Noa Isidore (Decathlon-CMA CGM) in a thrilling sprint finish. The 167.4km stage, starting in Figueres, saw the peloton reel in a late breakaway attempt by Liam Slock (Lotto-Intermarché) just a kilometre from the line.

A Tactical Sprint to the Finish

Cort launched his sprint with 150 metres remaining, overtaking Ivo Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) who had made a strong move with 350 metres to go. Isidore and Francesco Busatto (Alpecin-Premier Tech) were close behind, but Cort’s speed proved unmatched. Stage 1 winner Dorian Godon (Ineos Grenadiers) finished fourth, maintaining his overall lead by 10 seconds over Cort.

This victory marks Cort’s 35th professional win and his 13th in a Spanish race. He expertly navigated the undulating terrain and capitalized on strong teamwork from Uno-X Mobility to secure the stage win.

Teamwork and Familiar Roads

Cort credited his team for positioning him perfectly for the sprint. “It was a difficult stage,” he explained. “I wasn’t even sure I could fight for the sprint. My teammates brought me from the last position to first between 3km and 1.5km to go. It was tremendous work.”

The stage held a special significance for Cort, who previously lived in Girona. “For me, it’s like winning at home,” he said, highlighting his familiarity with the roads and terrain.

Breakaway Battle and Peloton Pursuit

The stage featured a breakaway group of five riders – Baptiste Veistroffer and Liam Slock (both Lotto-Intermarché), Julen Arriolabengoa (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Samuel Fernández (Euskaltel-Euskadi), and Diego Uriarte (Equipo Kern Pharma) – who kept the peloton engaged for much of the day. The Lotto-Intermarché duo of Veistroffer and Slock particularly animated the race, maintaining a significant lead for a considerable period.

However, a determined chase by teams including Ineos Grenadiers, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, and UAE Team Emirates-XRG ultimately brought the breakaway back within reach in the final kilometres.

General Classification Update

Dorian Godon continues to lead the general classification, tied on time with Magnus Cort. Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) sits third, four seconds behind, while Tom Pidcock (Pinarello-Q36.5) is fourth, six seconds off the pace.
