Five Children Found Living in Deplorable Conditions in Miami Beach
In a heartbreaking turn of events, five siblings were discovered living in squalid conditions in a Miami Beach apartment, leading to the arrest of their parents, Sanel Canovic and Azra Nikocevic, on multiple charges of child neglect.
The grim discovery was made after a concerned passerby spotted a six-year-old boy walking alone on a busy street near the 700 block of 15th Street. The Good Samaritan followed the child to his apartment and found four more siblings in similar circumstances, prompting her to alert the authorities.
Police investigation revealed horrifying living conditions. The apartment was without electricity for two months, leaving the children without proper illumination, heat, or refrigeration. The bathroom was filled with stagnant water and waste, and there was no toilet paper. The children were found wearing dirty clothes and emitted a strong odor.
The five siblings, aged between six and twelve, were sharing a single bed and relied on school breakfast and lunch programs for their daily sustenance. During school holidays, they often went hungry. The eldest daughter, twelve, told police that her father’s instructions were, "They eat at school, so they don’t eat at home."
The mother admitted to occasionally leaving $20 for the children to buy fast food but acknowledged that it was not enough to cover their basic needs. The parents, who work at a Miami hotel, would often leave the children unattended.
The intervention allowed the children to receive immediate attention. "The detectives took the kids to the Miami Beach Police Department, where they ate and explained that they hadn’t eaten in two days," reported Telemundo 51.
Canovic and Nikocevic were arrested and face five counts of child neglect each. They were each granted a $2,500 bond during their appearance in Miami-Dade courts. The children have been placed in protective custody while the Florida Department of Children and Families continues its investigation.
Neighbors expressed their shock but admitted they had noticed the children wandering the streets alone, even at night.
The distressing case has sparked concern in the community about the vulnerability of some families and reignited the debate about the need for more social support to prevent child neglect.
