Tens of Centimeters of Snow Expected in Eastern Norway as Winter Makes a Surprise Return
Article:
As December exits with a wet and warm farewell, Eastern Norway can look forward to a white New Year’s Eve. Siri Wiberg, duty meteorologist at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, confirms that a snowy conclusion to the year is increasingly likely.
"Snowfall is expected," Wiberg stated, adding that while the north of Eastern Norway might see less snow, the further south, the more snow expected, potentially between 5 to 10 centimeters. However, the rapid change could pose challenges to traffic and might bring rain that freezes on the ground, creating slippery driving conditions on New Year’s Eve.
"It could be difficult to drive," Wiberg warned, noting that the institute is closely monitoring the situation and may issue warning alerts.
In North Norway, the days leading up to New Year’s Eve will be the most affected by the heavy snowfall. Strong gusts of wind and considerable amounts of snow are expected, particularly in North Helgeland and large parts of Salten, where up to 30-60 centimeters of snow is anticipated between Monday and Tuesday.
Petters Ekrem, duty meteorologist, urges everyone to secure vulnerable structures, such as roofs, due to the expected wet and heavy snow. With strong winds and slippery roads, drivers may want to reconsider hitting the road.
Although the snowstorm in North Norway is expected to subside by Tuesday, Ekrem warns that the worst conditions will likely coincide with the New Year’s celebrations.
The upcoming days before New Year’s Eve promise mild weather in Eastern Norway. While scattered rain is possible in the late afternoon and evening, sunny intervals are also expected. Weather conditions are predicted to be more manageable on Wednesday, ensuring a fine and cold finish to the week.
