LukOil’s Digital Resources Hit
The GUR’s cyber specialists breached LukOil’s digital infrastructure, affecting its mobile payment services. Customers were unable to process payments at gas stations via the company’s mobile app, disrupting everyday transactions. The impact of the attack extended to other targets, including smart terminal services ‘EvoTor’ and the unified digital tracking system ‘Cheстный знак’ (Honest Sign), causing widespread issues for Russian users.
Widespread Disruption and Losses
The timing of the attack, coinciding with the holiday season, exacerbated users’ frustrations and losses. Sources familiar with the situation report a surge in consumer complaints and significant blows to the trade sector due to failures in payment systems. Consumers were unable to purchase goods, leading to substantial inconveniences and financial losses.
Previous GUR Cyber Operations
This latest cyber strike comes after GUR hackers took down several Russian government websites, including those of the State Duma and Constitutional Court, on December 12. The sites displayed a message stating, "The country Russia no longer exists," and were subsequently paralyzed.
