Codenames Party is heading to Netflix’s new cloud gaming platform as part of a public beta rollout in select regions, developed by Brno-based studio CGE rather than simply licensing the board game. The title aims to anchor the platform’s holiday season push for living room couch play.
Development and Origins of Codenames Party
Netflix originally approached Czech studio CGE to acquire a license. Instead, developers showed the mobile version of the game to Netflix representatives, leading to a direct development partnership. “Netflix se chce na nové platformě zaměřit na tzv. gaučové hraní s přáteli v obýváku,” says Daniel Musil, head of the Brno studio CGE, explaining that the company specifically sought out suitable party games. CGE aimed to finish the title ahead of the peak holiday season when users have more free time for indoor entertainment.
Gameplay Mechanics and the New Party Mode
Players control the game using their individual mobile phones as controllers while viewing the main action on a television screen. The platform supports both classic team combat drawn from the board game and a case-solving mode. However, the core attraction is a newly engineered Party mode built alongside Netflix designers. In this setup, participants compete against each other directly on the television display, generating personal clues for unique word combinations while simultaneously guessing other players’ associations. “Vzali jsme to, co mají lidi na Krycích jménech nejraději – moment, kdy se vám podaří vymyslet skvělé spojení slov – a umožnili jsme všem u obrazovky, aby si ho užili bez prostojů a čekání,” notes Petr Murmak, founder and co-owner of CGE.
Regional Availability and Public Beta Rollout
Czech subscribers will not find the title immediately, as the game remains restricted to regions where Netflix is currently testing the cloud gaming service. CGE marketing manager Ondřej Skácel notes that deployment follows a staged rollout typical of cloud services. “Netflix sám aktuální stav označuje za veřejnou betu. Do té zahrnul některé testovací a pro ně důležité regiony – USA, Velkou Británii, Francii, ale třeba i Jihoafrickou republiku,” says Skácel. The title is also accessible in neighboring countries including Poland, Austria, and Germany.
Localisation Plans for the Czech Market
Brno developers have already prepared an internal Czech translation of the title. While platform operators have not announced a firm release date for the Czech Republic, CGE intends to deploy the localized version as soon as the service officially expands into the region. “Počítáme s tím, že pokud se tato služba objeví i v Česku, hru přeložíme do češtiny a nabídneme ji tak i u nás,” confirms Murmak.
