Sensors and Transparent Handhandles Shape Tournament Fair Play

The tournament in Ostrava features a technological innovation developed by Buštěhradská firma Inosens CZ, which supplies electronic curling handles equipped with sensors to detect illegal stone releases. Funded in part by the European Union and tested during the Winter Olympics in Cortina, the handles utilize red and green lights to verify whether a player releases the stone before crossing the hog-line. Technicians developed the system to eliminate disputes over timing and ensure fair play across international competitions.

“One of the rules of curling says that a player must release the stone actually before crossing the so-called hog-line,” Jan Včelák, technical director at Inosens CZ, said. The implementation of sensor-equipped handles has affected several teams throughout international play as officials automatically remove improperly released stones from competition.
