Title: Argentina“>Dánica Closes Margarine Plant in Buenos Aires, Laid Off 150 Workers

The renowned Argentine margarine brand, Dánica, has shut down its Buenos Aires factory in Lavallol, leaving 150 workers unemployed. The closure occurred after the company applied the article 247 of the Labor Contract Law, which allows for a reduced 50% indemnization due to the "grave economic situation". The production, however, will be transferred to another location in the interior of the country through outsourcing.

Dánica’s local plant had been operative since 1939 but faced difficulties maintaining competitiveness. The closure comes amidst high labor costs, particularly the collective bargaining agreement, logistics issues, and a decline in sales, all exacerbated by the current economic recession. The news was met with disapproval by the Workers’ Union of Oilseed Processors and the Federation of Oilseed Workers, who have requested the intervention of the Buenos Aires Province’s Ministry of Labor to safeguard the workers’ job prospects.

Founded in 1939 by a Danish immigrant, Dánica was acquired by the Brazilian group BRF in 2011, then transferred to the Beltrán Group in 2019. Despite the Lavallol plant’s closure, the company maintains an adәкrzes production plant in Córdoba’s Parque Industrial Ferreyra.

A Historic Jingle

The Dánica brand owes its fame to its iconic Advertising jingle, which etched itself into the hearts of Argentine generations. The "Dánica Dorada, Dánica Dorada" melody, featuring a little girl jumping rope, first aired in 1973 and remained etched in national household memory alongside the margarine logo.

Initiating its margarine production in 1940, Dánica started churning out the first entirely vegetable margarine in 1963, naming it ‘Dánica’.
