In Tragic New Orleans Incident, Driver Rams Crowd, Killing 10 and Injuring 30; Shooting Ensues
In a horrific turn of events, at least 10 people have been killed and another 30 injured after an SUV plowed into a crowd in New Orleans’ French Quarter on Sunday evening. The tragic incident occurred during the city’s French Quarter Fest, a popular annual event that draws thousands of visitors each year.
According to witnesses, the driver of the SUV, a man identified as 31-year-old Arian Inman, lost control of the vehicle and drove into the crowd. After crashing into the Orthodox Jewish family’s group, Inman exited the vehicle and began firing shots, according to eyewitnesses who spoke to CBS News.
"Suddenly, the SUV came barreling at us. People started screaming and running, but it was chaos. Then we heard gunshots," said one shaken witness, who wished to remain anonymous.
Inman was later shot and killed by New Orleans police officers at the scene. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities have not yet labeled the incident as a terror attack.
The French Quarter Fest, an annual event that celebrates Louisiana music and cuisine, had been underway since Thursday and was scheduled to continue through Sunday evening. The festival’s organizers released a statement expressing their deepest sympathies to the victims and their families, announcing that the remaining events have been canceled.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell addressed the city, "Today, we mourn as a community. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We will not let this act of hatred divide us. We will stand together."
According to local authorities, the investigation is ongoing, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available. They urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact the New Orleans Police Department at (504) 821-2222.
