Massimiliano Allegri faces a decisive test against the Serie a leaders
Massimiliano Allegri boarded an afternoon flight from Porto on November 5, 2026, following a 4-1 Champions League defeat that dropped Napoli to 26th place in the European standings after four matches, Eurosport reported.
The manager returns to Italy under mounting pressure as Napoli prepares to face league leaders Lazio at 12:30 on Sunday. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the upcoming fixture serves as an ultimate test for the Tuscan coach, who has overseen seven defeats in fourteen official matches this season.
The three-day training camp at Castel Volturno
ANSA reported that Napoli players returned to Italy on the afternoon of November 5 and will report to the Castel Volturno training center for a morning session. Following lunch, the entire squad will enter a three-day training camp in the Phlegraean Fields area.
Corriere della Sera noted that club president Aurelio De Laurentiis originally ordered the punitive isolation to begin immediately after the Porto match. Allegri successfully mediated to secure a one-day reduction, granting the squad a brief reprieve before the weekend fixture.
Rasmus Højlund publicly criticizes manager after defeat
Reports from Corriere della Sera highlight a deepening split within the squad between Italian players and certain foreign contingent members, alongside visible frustration from Lorenzo Lucca and Kevin De Bruyne’s visible pitch-side agitation during recent matches.
Following the defeat in Portugal, forward Rasmus Højlund broke his usual silence to publicly distance himself from the manager’s tactical assessment. Non sono d’accordo con lui, abbiamo giocato male,
Højlund stated to reporters, marking a rare instance of open dissent within the group.
De Laurentiis weighs the future of the technical staff
De Laurentiis ordered a team retreat while Allegri sought to steady the squad following their recent defeat. While the club maintains its trust in Allegri for now, La Gazzetta dello Sport identifies Stefano Pioli as the primary candidate to replace him should the team falter against Lazio.
Amid mounting speculation, Allegri defended his approach during media availability, maintaining a calm demeanor under fire. Accusare i giocatori non serve, bisogna lavorare e stare zitti,
Allegri said, adding, Il mio stile è questo.
