In a devastating turn of events, an Azerbaijan Airlines plane en route from Baku to Grozny, Russia, crashed in western Kazakhstan, resulting in the loss of 38 lives. The Boeing 757, performing flight AZ762, went down near the city of Aktau on Wednesday, December 25, 2024.
Emergency Landing and Explosion
The aircraft attempted an emergency landing around three kilometers from Aktau International Airport. Tragically, it overshot the runway, leading to the aircraft breaking apart and catching fire. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, battling harsh weather conditions to tend to the survivors and retrieve the deceased.
Casualties and Survivors
Kanat Bozumbayev, Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, confirmed the grim toll. "The situation is critical. We regret to inform that 38 people have lost their lives," he stated. Out of the 69 passengers and crew on board, 29 sustained injuries and were hospitalized for treatment.
Nationalities of Victims
The passenger manifest revealed that 42 passengers were citizens of Azerbaijan, with 16 Russians, six Kazakhs, and three Kyrgyzstani nationals making up the remainder. Fortunately, there were no Indonesian nationals among the passengers or crew.
No Immediate Cause Determined
Investigations into the cause of the crash are underway, with local authorities and Azerbaijan Airlines cooperating with international aviation bodies. Weather conditions at the time of the crash were reportedly poor, with heavy snow and low visibility, but it remains unclear if this was a contributing factor.
Indonesian Government Response
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that no Indonesian nationals were affected by the tragic incident. "We express our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic event," said Judha Nugraha, Director of the Ministry’s Consular Affairs and Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Department.
