Expanding Dengue Frontiers: Expert Insights on Vaccination, Prevention, and COVID-19

In a recent radio program, renowned infectious disease specialist and university professor Dr. Hugo Pizzi shared his expert insights on the escalating dengue problem in the region.

Dr. Pizzi Addresses Age Concerns Regarding Dengue Vaccine
Dr. Pizzi clarified that although the National Administration of Medicaments, Foods, and Medical Technology (ANMAT) approved the dengue vaccine for those aged 4 to 60, the vaccine’s safety has been confirmed beyond this age range through real-world experience. He reassured listeners that the dengue vaccine, made from a weakened virus, is safe for healthy individuals over 4 years old, except for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, HIV positive, undergoing cancer treatment, or on prolonged corticoide therapy.

Widespread Dengue Threat Requires Multipronged Approach
Emphasizing the current severity of the dengue situation, Dr. Pizzi noted that the disease has spread throughout the country, reaching as far south as Neuquén. He recommended a comprehensive strategy to combat the disease, including using nets in beds, cleaning patios, and applying insecticides.

Travel Advice: Fiebre Amarilla Vaccine and Protection
Touching on the importance of the fiebre amarilla vaccine for those traveling to Brazil, Dr. Pizzi reminded listeners that proper use of repellent and sunscreen is crucial, particularly in Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo, where fiebre amarilla is most prevalent. He emphasized that a single fiebre amarilla vaccine provides lifelong protection, with no need for vaccinated individuals to worry about boosters.

COVID-19 Vaccine Safety and Effectiveness
Addressing concerns about COVID-19 vaccines, Dr. Pizzi emphasized their safety and efficacy, citing the AstraZeneca vaccine as the only one with minor issues, affecting just 51 people out of 3.5 billion doses administered. He underscored that vaccines have saved countless lives and encouraged listeners to stay up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations, as the disease continues to circulate. According to Dr. Pizzi, around 500 people died from COVID-19 in 2023, out of approximately 100,000 cases.
