A 23-year-old former household employee has been arrested following the brutal rape and murder of a 22-year-old woman in South Delhi’s Kailash Hills. The suspect, identified as Rahul Meena, was apprehended on Wednesday evening from a hotel in Dwarka.
The Sequence of Events
Investigators reveal that Meena’s arrival in Delhi followed a violent episode in Alwar, Rajasthan. On Tuesday night, he allegedly sexually assaulted his friend’s wife and subsequently hid on a hill called ‘Kali Pahari’ for two and a half hours to evade villagers.
After fleeing Alwar, Meena stole a bicycle and gatecrashed a wedding around 1 a.m. To eat dinner. He then used a motorcycle and a hired van to reach Kailash Hills by 5:30 a.m. On Wednesday.
A Violent Assault and Robbery
The victim, an IIT graduate and UPSC aspirant, was studying in her room when Meena barged in and demanded money to pay off his debts. When she refused and attempted to call her father, Meena allegedly strangled her with a mobile phone charger cable and attacked her head with a water bottle and a lamp.
Police reports indicate that Meena raped the victim while she was alive but unconscious. He then dragged her from the fourth floor to the third floor in a failed attempt to apply her biometric fingerprints to unlock a protected safe.
After failing to use the fingerprints, Meena broke the lock with a heavy object. He stole jewellery worth approximately ₹10 lakh and ₹1.5-2 lakh in cash, which he carried away in a black backpack.
Forensic Findings and Legal Status
An autopsy conducted at AIIMS confirmed that the victim died of strangulation following a violent assault. The examination revealed a fracture of the nasal bone, multiple lacerations on the face, and intramuscular haemorrhage in the neck muscles.
The Saket Court has since granted Delhi Police four days of custodial interrogation of Rahul Meena. Authorities have recovered most of the stolen cash, noting that the accused had spent approximately ₹7,000.
