In the early hours of the second Christmas Day, driving conditions in Northern Norway have been severely impacted by heavy storms, with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) announcing the closure of several major routes.

E6 Closed Over Saltfjellet

The stretch of E6 over the mountain pass Saltfjellet has been closed due to the ongoing storm in the region. A new assessment will be made at 08:00, with updates provided on the NPRA’s platform.

The NPRA’s overview also shows that E69 is closed at several points, including the Repvåg-Nordkapptunnelen in Nordkapp, Hønsa-Repvåg in Porsanger, Skipsfjordhøgda-Skarsvåg in Nordkapp, and Skarsvåg-Nordkapp.

Ferry Services Modify Schedules

Several ferry services, including Bognes-Lødingen, have reported adjustments to their schedules due to the adverse weather conditions. Meanwhile, numerous local county roads in Finnmark have also been closed.

Hurtigruten Cancels Sailings

As a result of the storm, Hurtigruten has been forced to cancel several sailings on the first and second days of Christmas. The MS «Nordkapp» has suspended stops at various ports, including Tromsø, while the MS «Midnattsol» has cancelled trips from Risøyhamn to Stamsund on its southbound route. Both ships are expected to return to their regular schedules on December 27.

The storm has also caused the closure of the bridge between Tromsø and Kvaløya, with several drivers ignoring warnings and traveling across the bridge despite high wind speeds.

Storm warnings and safety advice

Meteorologists have issued warnings for heavy winds, ice, and significant avalanche risk. The public is advised to show caution and follow traffic updates and road closures to ensure safety.

Throughout the second day of Christmas, the storm is expected to intensify, with potential local wind gusts reaching 33–45 m/s and strong gales along the coast.

Motorists are advised to consider driving chains due to the potential risk of snow adhesion, and to be prepared for possible road closures and delays.

Stay safe and informed as the storm continues to affect travel in Northern Norway. For the latest updates, follow the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and local weather services.
