Extreme Weather Advisory: Indonesia Braces for Heavy Rains and Storms at Year’s End

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for extreme weather conditions expected to hit Indonesia from December 27, 2024, to January 2, 2025.

According to BMKG, various atmospheric phenomena are anticipated to affect the weather in Indonesia over the next week. The strengthening of the Asian monsoon, coupled with a weak La Niña effect, is expected to bring increased rainfall to the region. Additionally, active atmospheric waves have been predicted in several parts of Indonesia, along with a potential for tropical cyclone formation and cyclonic circulation in the Indian Ocean south of the Maritime Continent. These factors could lead to heavy rainfall and strong winds, causing hydrometeorological disasters in several regions across Indonesia.

In light of these potential extreme weather conditions, BMKG urges the public to:

  • Anticipate hydrometeorological disaster risks such as floods, landslides, and waterlogging, especially in high-risk areas.
  • Clean up drains and surroundings to minimize flood risks.
  • Avoid activities in high-risk areas and prepare emergency kits.
