East L.A. Community Mourns Loss of Teen Mentor
The East Los Angeles community is mourning the death of Joshua Aila, a 17-year-old senior at Esteban Torres High School. Aila was killed in a shooting early Saturday near the intersection of 6th Street and Fraser Avenue.
Aila, who was just three weeks away from graduation, was a mentor to young boxers at Champions East LA Fight Academy, where he was known as “Coach Jawsh.” He had expressed dreams of opening his own gym. On Monday, family, friends, classmates, and coaches gathered to remember his life, and impact.
The loss of a student leader and mentor could affect the many young people he guided. As the community processes this tragedy, the period of mourning and remembrance may continue.
Silver Lake Artist Produces National-Scale Work from Local ADU
In Silver Lake, artist Julie Burton is crafting glass jewelry, ceramics, and home decor out of an ADU. While produced in a residential space, her work is distributed widely, appearing in museum gift shops and independent boutiques across the country.

Two of the last family-owned local restaurants in Echo Park, Rodeo Mexican Grill and Combo A, have released a collaborative video.
