Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was sentenced to 18 months in prison at the end of October for breaching a 2021 court order by repeatedly making defamatory remarks about a Syrian refugee. Musk, however, believes that Robinson’s incarceration is unwarranted. "Free Tommy Robinson!" Musk tweeted, questioning why Robinson is in isolation for "saying the truth."
This is not the first time Musk has commented on UK politics since the Labor Party reclaimed power in June. In the wake of anti-immigrant riots that shook the country between July 30 and August 5, Musk predicted that a "civil war" was "inevitable." He has also criticized the Keir Starmer-led government, accusing it of being too harsh on rioters and running a "tyrannical police state."
Musk’s latest intervention comes amidst mounting concerns from Britain’s Conservative Party about his connections with Reform UK, an anti-immigration party. Musk met with Reform UK leader Nigel Farage in Florida recently, and reports suggest that he might be planning to donate millions of dollars to the party.
However, Musk’s tweet about Robinson is not without controversy. Robinson, with over a million followers on his Twitter account, has been accused of inciting anti-immigrant violence in the past. His comments in July and August this year were reportedly deemed to be inflammatory and hateful by British authorities.
This isn’t the first time Musk has faced backlash for his political leanings. In December, Germany accused him of trying to influence their elections by supporting the far-right AfD party. Musk’s apparent endorsement of Reform UK has followed similar criticism.
In his tweet, Musk also drew attention to a high-profile case of child sexual exploitation in the north of England. Over 1,500 children were reportedly exploited between 1997 and 2013, with many lamenting the apparent inaction of authorities. Musk placed blame on Starmer, who was the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) chief from 2008 to 2013, asking "Who was in charge of the CPS when child sex grooming gangs were allowed to operate with impunity?"
Musk’s final comment on the matter was a call for fresh elections in the UK. "New elections for the UK should be held," he tweeted, further stirring the political pot.
