The text vanished from the Newsweek website without an explanation after brief publication, a move that Hurezeanu described in his Digi24 interview as a defining characteristic of the entire incident.

“We are attacked on all fronts,” Hurezeanu said, characterizing the article as an almost benign symptom of hidden warfare. He argued that the piece fit neatly into a landscape of targeted calumny and information intoxication directed at countries considered hostile by Russia. Editorial Standards and the Role of Josh Hammer

Following inquiries by HotNews regarding whether the publication of the text was paid, Newsweek did not disclose financial details, and the article was not marked as advertising. Jennifer H. Cunningham, the editor-in-chief, told HotNews that the piece was published “din neatenție” and removed because it “nu corespundea standardelor editoriale”.

However, he maintained that these supporters have every right to have their grievances reflected internationally. At the same time, the former foreign minister stressed that Romanian authorities hold a duty to provide clearer explanations regarding the profound motivations behind the cancellation of the second round of the 2024 elections.

Assessing Washington’s Influence

Addressing speculation that the article signaled covert support from the incoming Trump administration for Georgescu, Hurezeanu urged caution against over-interpreting the publication’s weight. He pointed out that Newsweek does not function as an official organ of the White House.
