Mexico City‘s Air Quality Deteriorates Post-Night of Pirotecnia; CAMe Enters Preventive Phase
Subhead:
Quema of fireworks during Nochebuena spikes PM2.5 pollution levels, prompting precautionary measures.
Article Summary:
The Commission Ambiental de la Megalópolis (CAMe) activated the Preventive Phase of the Environmental Alert System on Wednesday, December 25th, due to the very poor air quality recorded at the Santiago Acahualtepec station in Iztapalapa, Mexico City. The excessive use of fireworks (pirotecnia) during the Nochebuena celebrations resulted in unprecedented particle matter (PM2.5) pollution levels.
CAMe has reported that various neighborhoods in Mexico City, as well as municipalities in the State of Mexico, have registered poor air quality. However, the air quality is considered acceptable in most other areas within the Valley of Mexico metropolitan zone.
To prevent escalation to Phase 1 of the Environmental Contingency Plan, local authorities have called upon citizens to take proactive measures, including refraining from burning materials or waste, reducing the use of private vehicles, carpooling, and utilizing public transportation. Additionally, intensified surveillance and swift fire response are being implemented in rural and forest areas.
Exposure to polluted air can trigger symptoms such as eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, allergies, and respiratory infections. Sudden heart events and exacerbation of conditions like asthma and chronic respiratory diseases could also ensue. The CAMe advises the public to monitor air quality via the AIRE CDMX app and website, stay indoors with windows closed, refrain from smoking and using incense, utilize air conditioning in recirculation mode, be cautious when exercising outdoors, and wear a face mask when venturing into areas with poor air quality.
