Davao City – The European Union (EU) has committed at least P8.5 billion in assistance for peace and development initiatives in Mindanao over the past five years, with a significant portion directed towards the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
Long-Standing Partnership
EU Ambassador to the Philippines Massimo Santoro emphasized the EU’s role as a “reliable partner,” working alongside national and Bangsamoro institutions to support locally-led solutions for peace, development, and inclusive growth. He noted the EU’s involvement in Mindanao dates back to minor-scale projects initiated in the 1970s, evolving into a broader dialogue and range of actions.
Santoro stated the EU is proud to be among the biggest development partners of the BARMM. Support has focused on the Bangsamoro peace process, aiding both the political transition and the socioeconomic recovery of areas affected by conflict.
BARMM’s Progress and EU Support
The EU has provided assistance to communities within the six MILF camps recognized by the government and MILF peace panels. Santoro lauded the BARMM’s recent seventh foundation anniversary, stating the region’s journey toward peace and development is cause for celebration. The EU’s assistance is aligned with the Bangsamoro Development Plan.
The EU has undertaken at least 100 strategic interventions impacting BARMM ministries, offices, and agencies within the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA), the interim governing body. The Bangsamoro Agri-Enterprise Program, supported by the EU, aims to connect farmers and fisherfolk to markets and attract private investment.
Santoro assured continued EU partnership with both the BARMM and the wider Mindanao region.
