A former teacher in Jogja, identified as ST, has been terminated by her school following a viral scandal involving inappropriate behavior with a student. The incident, which came to light in 2023, led to the teacher’s dismissal in late December of the same year.
Eko, the head of the SMP where ST once taught, confirmed the termination to reporters. According to Eko, the school not only fired ST due to the escapade but also because ST was pursuing further education in teaching (PPG) at the time.
"The incident happened last year, and we made the decision to dismiss ST because they were also pursuing PPG," Eko said. "We felt it was best to remove her from the teaching staff to prevent any further disruption to the schedule and learning environment."
The school had sought clarification from ST regarding the incident, during which she claimed that the student involved, who can be identified by the initial Y, was her godchild.
"We called both parties for clarification. Y became ST’s godchild, and we confirmed this was the case," Eko explained.
Despite the teacher’s dismissal, the student is allowed to continue their education at the school. Eko clarified that Y had to retake an exam due to not meeting the school’s minimum standards, a process known as remediation.
"Y took the exam, not a makeup. If students don’t meet the minimum requirements, they have to retake the exam. This isn’t unique to Y; many students go through the same process," Eko added.
Eko stressed that by the time the student was allegedly held hostage and abused at ST’s residence in September 2024, ST was no longer affiliated with the school. Y had graduated by then, making the incident outside the school’s jurisdiction.
"By the time that incident occurred, Y had already graduated, so it was no longer our responsibility," Eko emphasized.
The viral story of a teacher engaging in inappropriate behavior with a student is still fresh in the public’s mind. The victim is said to have endured abuse for two years and is now receiving mental health treatment at a boarding school.
