Odesa Commander Held on Corruption Charges
Odesa, Ukraine – In a significant blow to integrity within the military, regional police and Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) have joined forces to uncover a commander alleged to have extorted bribes from subordinates for nearly seven months. The commander, from one of Odesa’s military units, was taken into custody after being caught red-handed.
It emerged that the suspect, in command for over eight months, required around 30% of extra monetary disbursements linked to completed combat missions from his subordinates. He якобы justified the action as meeting operational needs for his unit’s maintenance, particularly to fix equipment.
The commander strong-armed compliance, threatening obstinate personnel with career roadblocks and false efficiency assessments. Law enforcement estimates around UAH 400,000 collected by the commander throughout 2022 until December.
*"His greed for corruption was arrested as he took possession of an alleged UAH 41,000 bribe, meant as ‘December taxes’," as described by one officer involved with the case.
Accused on grounds of third-party bribery under article 368 of Ukraine’s Penal Code, which allows for imprisonment of up to ten years upon conviction, together with asset sequestration. The commander was remanded in custody, with bail as a release option; proceedings continue as law enforcement explores his alleged web of corruption further.*
