NASA, SpaceX Delay IMAP Space Probe Launch Yet Again, Aims for September 2025
NASA and SpaceX have jointly announced another delay in the launch of the Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP), pushing the mission‘s debut to September 2025. This isn’t the first time the IMAP’s launch date has been revised.
In 2020, NASA initially planned to launch IMAP in October 2024, but that date was subsequently moved to February 2024. Now, the mission’s launch has been further pushed back to September 2025.
NASA attributed the delay to the need for additional time to prepare IMAP’s flight system. However, specifics about the preparations remain unclear.
IMAP is a critical mission for NASA, as it will collaborate with SpaceX to study the heliosphere, the magnetic bubble that surrounds our solar system. Understanding the heliosphere’s boundaries is crucial for humanity’s future space exploration endeavors.
To gather detailed information about the heliosphere, IMAP will fly through it, sampling and mapping particles that flow into our solar system from the edge of space. Additionally, IMAP will study solar wind, energetic particles, and cosmic rays within the heliosphere.
"Particles in the heliosphere can impact human space exploration by damaging tech systems and may even play a role in the existence of life in the universe," NASA explained.
IMAP’s launch will be a rideshare mission, with SpaceX carrying two additional spacecraft: the Geocorona Observatory – Carruthers and the Space Weather Follow-On – Lagrange 1.
The Geocorona Observatory will capture light from Earth’s geocorona to predict solar activity that could affect our planet. Meanwhile, the Space Weather Follow-On – Lagrange 1, part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) mission, will study the Sun’s outer atmosphere and monitor solar particle streams to understand space weather conditions.
All three spacecraft are set to liftoff from SpaceX’s Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, carried by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
