Former Russian International Footballer Alexei Bugayev Killed in Ukraine Invasion
Former Russian national team footballer Alexei Bugayev has lost his life during Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine. This was confirmed by lawyer Anton Smirnov via his Telegram channel.
Bugayev was 43 years old at the time of his death.
"I regret to confirm that the reports of Alexei’s death are true," Smirnov told Russian media. Details surrounding his death are yet to be disclosed.
A versatile center-back, Bugayev represented Russia in seven international matches between 2004 and 2005, two of which were at the Euro 2004 tournament. On the club level, he turned out for notable teams such as Lokomotiv Moscow, Torpedo Moscow, and Krasnodar.
Post-retirement, Bugayev was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for attempted narcotics smuggling. While incarcerated, he was recruited by the military and eventually became involved in the conflict against Ukraine.
