Headline: Bulgaria‘s Aging Doctors: A Looming Crisis in Healthcare

Subhead: Experts warn of dire consequences if urgent measures aren’t taken to address the aging workforce and uneven distribution of doctors.

Bulgaria’s healthcare system faces a critical challenge with an aging workforce of personal physicians, putting the country’s healthcare future at risk. According to Bulgarian Medical Association (BMA) chairman, Dr. Nikolai Bronsalov, the situation is dire, and without immediate action, the shortage of doctors will worsen significantly in the next five years.

The crisis is particularly acute in regions like Kardzhali, Turgovishte, Razgrad, Pleven, and Sofia, where the absence of personal doctors is a growing concern. Dr. Bronsalov emphasized the need for political will to ensure a sustainable future for the Bulgarian healthcare sector, as 80-year-old doctors continue to practice, and there’s no one to replace them when they retire.

Dr. Bronsalov confirmed that the number of personal physicians is alarmingly low, despite a recent increase in medical students’ interest in general practice. The workload for these doctors is immense, with each handling around 1,800 patients on average.

To tackle this issue, Dr. Bronsalov suggested increasing the National Health Insurance Fund contributions to ensure adequate financing. He also noted that conflict in the healthcare system stems either from a lack of funding or lack of personnel, and the law does not seem to be effective in resolving these issues.

Moreover, Bulgaria ranks last in Europe regarding healthcare expenditure per capita. Despite the push for digitization in healthcare, some institutions still rely on paper-based systems, hindering progress and causing unnecessary stress on the workforce.

With 27% of Bulgarian doctors over 60 years old and a nationwide lack of resources, urgent measures are needed to prevent a healthcare crisis. Stakeholders must join forces to address the aging doctor workforce, uneven distribution, and inadequate funding to secure a stable future for Bulgarian healthcare.
