Headline: Hundreds Gather in Candlelight Vigil for Alpiniists Luca Perazzini and Cristian Gualdi
In the quiet town of Sant’Arcangelo, a wave of grief and solidarity swept through the streets as hundreds of locals and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil to remember Luca Perazzini and Cristian Gualdi, the two experienced alpinists who lost their lives on the Gran Sasso mountain last week.
The somber procession, organized by the local sports association, began at the ‘Pontaccio’, a historic landmark in the town, and wound its way through the streets. The air was thick with emotion as the participants held aloft candles, their flickering flames a poignant reminder of the lives cut tragically short.
The vigil came just hours after the confirmation that the cause of death for the two men, who had been missing since December 22, was hypothermia, not the injuries sustained during their fall in the Valle dell’Inferno. The news was a devastating blow to their families and friends, who had held onto a glimmer of hope until the very last moment.
Among the mourners was Giancarlo, the 70-year-old father of Luca Perazzini. Speaking with a voice heavy with grief, he thanked the community for their outpouring of support. "This is a terrible time for our family," he said. "But seeing so many people come together to remember Luca is a testament to the love and respect he had in this community."
The vigil was just one of several tributes planned in the coming days. The funerals for the two men will take place on January 2, with Cristian’s service at the Collegiata and Luca’s at the parochial church in San Vito. Tomorrow evening, the town will come together once again for a memorial organized by the mayor, with two candles lit in their honor.
As the investigation into the tragedy continues, the prosecutor in Teramo, Laura Colica, is piecing together the events that led to the fatal accident. The sudden and unexpected change in weather conditions on December 22, with winds reaching over 150 km/h and a blizzard, caught the two men off guard. Despite their extensive experience, they were unable to withstand the brutal force of the storm and fell to their deaths.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the friends and loved ones of Luca and Cristian have taken to social media to share their memories and express their grief. Francesca Giovannetti, a lawyer from Rimini and a close friend of Luca, wrote a heartfelt tribute: "Today, words fail us. We hoped you would come back home and tell us, laughing, ‘You should have seen this! I made it to the papers.’ But you didn’t. And now, we’re left with your laughter, your smile, and our memories."
The president of the local branch of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), Mauro Campidelli, also paid tribute to the two men, saying, "You don’t need to know someone to feel their loss. When you share the same passions, you share the same pain."
As the community of Sant’Arcangelo comes together to mourn the loss of two of their own, one thing is clear: the legacy of Luca Perazzini and Cristian Gualdi will live on, not just in the hearts of those who knew them, but in the spirit of adventure and camaraderie that binds all who dare to conquer the great outdoors.
