Article:
A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in Surabaya, East Java, as the body of a young boy, initially identified only by his initials MR (3.5 years old), was discovered in the Makmur River in Wiyung. The grim discovery marked the end of a four-day search after the boy was reported missing on Tuesday, December 24.
The child’s body was found on Friday, December 27, at around 2:05 PM local time, near the SMPN 34 Surabaya bridge. It was later retrieved from the river and taken to the Dr. Soetomo General Hospital for an autopsy.
In a somber ceremony, the body of the young boy was returned to his hometown of Pasuruan, accompanied by an ambulance and a police escort at 5:00 PM local time. Mayor Eri Cahyadi of Surabaya was present at the scene, extending his condolences to the grief-stricken family.
The boy’s parents, who are currently working in Malaysia, have since returned to Surabaya. Mayor Eri confirmed that the family had requested the boy’s body be transported to Pasuruan for burial, which is scheduled for Friday evening.
"The boy is the son of Surabaya residents who are working in Malaysia. Unfortunately, this tragic incident happened on the day of his disappearance," said Mayor Eri, expressing his deepest sympathies to the family.
The mayor also took the opportunity to remind parents of their responsibility in caring for their children, especially during heavy rain. "I hope that parents are more vigilant in caring for their children, especially during heavy rain. We must be more careful to prevent such tragedies from happening again."
The boy’s death serves as a stark reminder of the importance of children’s safety, particularly during adverse weather conditions. As search efforts for the boy turned into a recovery mission, the community is left with a heavy heart and a call for increased vigilance and care for our children.
