Headline: Major Fire Engulfs Vacant Hotel in Helsingborg; Arson Suspected
A significant fire erupted in a hotel in Helsingborg on Friday night, leading police to investigate it as a case of arson. The blaze, which remains under control as of Saturday, is expected to continue for at least another day, according to Peter Hjort, the duty leader at the Nordic-West Skåne Fire and Rescue Service, who spoke to Expressen.
The fire alarm was raised around 11 PM on Friday. Four ambulances and seven fire trucks rushed to the scene, where firefighters have been battling the flames throughout the night. The hotel is currently under renovation and uninhabited, but the numerous openings between floors have complicated the extinguishing process, Hjort stated.
Fire Threatens Neighboring Buildings, Residents Advised
As the fire raged on Saturday, the risk of a building collapse intensified, further complicating extinguishing efforts. "The entire roof has been destroyed, and a crane is on site to help remove parts of it," Hjort said. "However, due to the collapse risk, this limits the extinguishing efforts from the outside. We can’t extinguish the fire internally."
Firefighters are working valiantly to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings. The hotel’s total destruction is anticipated.
Residents in the vicinity have been advised to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed. So far, no injuries have been reported. The hotel’s two staircases have been evacuated as a precaution.
Police Investigate Arson as Cause
Police are treating the incident as suspected arson and have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Patrik Fors, press spokesman for the South Sweden Police Region, confirmed this development, stating that it is essential to establish what exactly transpired.
The fire in Helsingborg is one of several major blazes that have recently gripped Sweden, including a suspected arson incident in a multi-apartment building in Huddinge, which left 13 people displaced.
This is a developing story, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
