A Fatal Confrontation in Oaklands

Verulam police have launched a murder investigation after an unidentified man was found dead in dense brush in Oaklands, north of Durban, on Thursday, 9 July. The man, suspected of attempted robbery, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds—including one to his left leg—roughly 100 metres from the roadway.

The Perimeter Breach

The sequence began on Oaklands Drive, where residents reported an intruder forcing his way onto a private property. Prem Balram, spokesman for Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), stated that the suspect allegedly cut a hole in a perimeter fence to gain entry. When the homeowner confronted him, the intruder reportedly produced an Okapi pocket knife and attempted an attack, prompting a frantic call for help from neighbors.

Armed Intervention and Departure

As the suspect fled the property, a passing motorist in a bakkie intervened. Witnesses claim the driver stopped to assist and opened fire on the suspect. The shooter did not wait for authorities, departing the scene before emergency personnel arrived. RUSA officers later discovered the body near a stream after traversing a steep embankment. They also recovered an Okapi pocket knife on a pathway leading to the scene, matching the tool reportedly used during the initial confrontation.

The Forensic and Legal Challenge

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed the murder case, noting that the official motive remains under investigation. Verulam police are prioritizing witness statements from those who initially alerted the reaction team, while searching for further physical evidence along the path where the body was recovered.
