First Lady Asma al-Assad‘s Health Deteriorates; Isolated for Infection Risk

Reports suggest that Asma al-Assad, the First Lady of Syria, is facing a critical health situation. Sources close to the family have revealed that due to her current condition, she is unable to be in the same room as anyone else. Her prognosis for the coming week is reportedly 50-50.

The reason behind Asma’s isolation is believed to be to prevent her from contracting infectious diseases from others. For a time, she was reportedly under the care of her father, Fawas Akhras, in Moscow, who is said to be in poor health himself.

Asma, aged 49, is a British-Syrian national who had likely been in Moscow for medical treatments just before her husband, President Bashar al-Assad’s regime was toppled by Islamic insurgents in Damascus on December 8, 2024.

Back in May 2024, the Syrian President’s office had announced that Asma had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a type of blood cancer that affects the bone marrow. AML is characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal white blood cells, hampering the body’s ability to fight infection.

Asma had previously undergone treatment for breast cancer in 2019, from which she made a full recovery. However, her current health situation appears to be quite grave, with sources close to the family expressing serious concerns.

As the situation in Syria continues to unfold, the health of its First Lady remains a key concern.
