Amsterdam Kicks Off Ice Skating Season with First Local Iceskating Day; More Expected in January
Ice skating enthusiasts in Amsterdam got their first taste of the season on Saturday as the city hosted its inaugural ‘IJsdag’ (Ice Day), with promises of more events to come next month.
Under clear blue skies, thousands of locals and tourists alike laced up their skates and took to the frozen canals, marking the unofficial start of the winter sports calendar. The event, organized by the IJscomvee Foundation, saw the city’s historic canal district transformed into a sprawling, open-air rink.
"It was incredible to see so many people of all ages enjoying the canals together," said event organizer, Jan van der Ley. "This is exactly what we hoped for when we decided to launch this initiative."
The day was filled with activities, including skate-a-thons, ice sculpting workshops, and even a competitive game of ‘Kan.hhokkel’n’ (what’s similar to ‘capture the flag,’ but on ice). Food and drinks stalls lined the canal banks, offering visitors hot ghoulash and warm chocomel to fend off the chill.
While the success of Saturday’s event has organizers planning for more IJsdag occurrences in January, they caution that the scheduling depends on factors such as weather conditions and ice thickness.
"We’re crossing our fingers for some more cold snaps," jokes van der Ley, "But whatever happens, we’re committed to making this an annual tradition that brings our city together."
