Title: Argentina‘s Game-Changer: F-16 Fighter Jets transform Air Defense

In a historic move, Argentina is set to regain its supersonic capabilities with the arrival of 24 F-16 fighter jets from Denmark. This acquisition, estimated at $650 million, is akin to the Mirage purchase of 1971, marking a significant advancement in the country’s defense sector.

The F-16’s incredible speed—a whopping 500 kilometers in just 12 minutes, compared to the Embraer ERJ-140LR’s over an hour for the same Tandil-Buenos Aires route—will revolutionize Argentina’s air defense. The first F-16, an ‘school’ model, has already arrived in Tandil and is scheduled for assembly and operation by January-February 2023.

Argentina’s investment extends beyond the aircraft procurement. The nation will upgrade its bases with repair and training capabilities. Pilots already selected boast experience with similar flight systems, like the Pampa III. Upon arrival, the F-16s will undergo reassembly and testing, followed by a series of maintenance and training exercises at the Area Material Río Cuarto.

The F-16s were first utilized in 1978 and are considered fully operational, despite their vintage status. According to Luis Petri, Minister of Defense, Argentina explored purchasing similar aircraft over a decade ago but ideological issues stalled the process. Now, the nation eagerly accepts these advanced combat aircraft to bolster its air defenses.

The F16 program, expected to span four years, will see delivery of six aircraft annually between 2025 and 2028. While the initial model in Tandil won’t be combat-ready, it will serve as a crucial training aid.
