For the first time in the history of Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), a woman has taken the helm of the Military Defense Office. General Brigadier Mariana de la Cruz Sánchez, a Justice Military officer and licensed lawyer, assumed the role in a ceremony held at the Campo Militar Número 1 in the State of Mexico.
Subsecretary of National Defense, Enrique Covarrubias López, administered the oath of office, acknowledging de la Cruz Sánchez’s new role in the military justice system. "She will be recognized as the general in charge of the Military Defense Office, to be obeyed according to military laws and regulations," he said.
Starting January 1, General de la Cruz Sánchez will oversee cases involving military crimes and offenses, playing a pivotal role in strengthening justice within the armed forces. The Military Defense Office is tasked with handling cases related to military discipline infractions and representing accused military personnel.
Her responsibilities will include managing military crimes, military discipline offense cases, and representing accused personnel before the Commission for Military Crimes. This appointment signifies a significant step forward in promoting gender equality within Mexico’s military.
