Title: Åsta Tragedy: A Quarter Century Later, Survivors and Responders Remember

The Åsta train disaster, one of Norway’s worst in modern times, occurred on January 4, 2000, when a southbound regional train collided with a northbound local train on the Røros Line. The impact punctured diesel tanks on both trains, igniting a fierce blaze.

Nils-Erik Haagenrud, former chief of the Midt-Hedmark fire and rescue service, led the response that day. Speaking to TV2, he recalled, "Even with 37 years in the fire service, Åsta is something I’ll never forget."

Haagenrud described the scene as devastating, both then and now. He and healthcare workers present had to make agonizing decisions, administering sedatives to those trapped in the wreckage who could not be rescued, fully aware they would perish in the inferno. Later, they had to cut out the bodies of the deceased.

"It’s impossible to forget something like that," Haagenrud said. "It leaves a mark on you for life."

Today marks 25 years since the disaster. A commemorative event will be held in Åmot, featuring speeches by Bane NOR CEO Thor Gjermund Eriksen, Jernbanedirektør Knut Sletta, and Åmot Mayor Ole Erik Hørstad. Synnøve Sakura Heggem will recite poetry.

The event begins at 13:00 at the Åsta memorial. From 10:00 to 17:00, Åmot Church will be open for those seeking solace or conversation.

Survivors and responders alike urge us to remember, lest we forget the lessons learned and the lives lost at Åsta.
