Belgium Enters Early Flu Season as Doctor Visits Surge

The official flu season has begun in Belgium, with the number of doctor visits due to flu-like symptoms surpassing baseline levels for two consecutive weeks, according to Sciensano, the nation’s scientific health institute. This marks a relatively early start to the flu season, as virologist Steven Van Gucht described it to VRT NWS.

Sciensano publishes weekly reports on the prevalence of acute respiratory infections. In week 51 (December 16-22), the number of flu consultations with general practitioners reached 115 per 100,000 inhabitants, exceeding the baseline in both week 51 and week 50, indicating the official start of the flu season.

Expected Increase

Both Van Gucht and virologist Johan Neyts predict a further increase in flu cases in the coming weeks. While the current number of cases remains relatively low due to the Christmas holidays, they anticipate a rise following the resumption of school. Although the number of confirmed influenza lab tests is increasing, the total remains relatively low. Scientists are still determining the specific influenza virus subtype currently in circulation.

With the holiday season wrapping up and schools set to resume, health officials urge the public to take preventive measures, including frequent hand washing, coughing into elbows, and staying home when sick to mitigate the spread of the flu.
