In a worrying trend, influenza cases are escalating in Dolj, with a rise in emergency room presentations for respiratory ailments. However, health authorities have reassured the public that no severe cases requiring oxygen or intensive care have been reported as of yet.

Last week, the Dolj Public Health Directorate confirmed 51 influenza cases through rapid testing. Among these, 39 were infected with the influenza A virus strain, while the remaining 12 were positive for the influenza B strain. The total number of respiratory virus and influenza cases stood at 955, a decrease from the previous week’s 1,647 cases. The incidence rate for upper respiratory tract infections was 86.45 per 10,000 population, with influenza accounting for 7.51 per 10,000 and pneumonia for 46.68 per 10,000. The hospitalization rate was 22.19%.

At the Victor Babeș Infectious Diseases Hospital in Craiova, over 700 people presented at the emergency room with respiratory symptoms last week. Among them, 434 adults and 300 children were treated for mild to moderate respiratory infections, with no hospitalizations required. However, 18 patients, including 11 children, were admitted with influenza. Dr. Dragoș Nicolosu, the hospital’s medical director, reported that most cases have been mild or moderate, with no severe complications such as pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy.

The current influenza wave is characterized by respiratory symptoms, unlike previous waves that also caused gastrointestinal symptoms. Patients have presented with symptoms such as cough, headache, fever, and muscle aches.

As of this date, 55,521 Dolj residents have received the seasonal flu vaccine, a slight increase compared to the same period last year. Last week’s influenza activity was categorized as "local," unlike the previous week’s "sporadic" activity. Health authorities urge residents to practice good hygiene, wash their hands regularly, avoid crowded spaces, ventilate enclosed spaces, and self-isolate at the first signs of illness.
