Heavy Fog Causes Chain of Collisions on Sofia‘s ‘Eagle Bridge

In a series of unfortunate events, thick fog led to a chain of collisions on one of Sofia’s busiest bridges, causing significant traffic disruptions. The incidents, which occurred on the Orlov Most (Eagle Bridge), involved multiple vehicles and left commuters stranded for hours.

The first collision, according to DarikNews, took place between two vehicles, blocking one lane and causing a ripple effect that led to additional crashes. The fog, described as ‘dense,’ reduced visibility to near zero, making it nearly impossible for drivers to see the road ahead or other vehicles.

A separate incident, reported by 24 Chasa, involved a taxi that was caught up in the chaos, further complicating the situation and causing significant delays. Images from the scene (courtesy of btvnovinite.bg) showed several vehicles with visible damage, scattered across the bridge.

The collisions comes amidst a streak of fog-related incidents in the capital, as reported by Fokus and Trud. Experts advise drivers to exercise extreme caution when driving in low visibility conditions, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles and reducing speed.

Road authorities have also reminded drivers to use their hazard lights when involved in a breakdown or accident to increase visibility and help prevent secondary collisions. Despite the inconvenience caused, no severe injuries were reported in the series of collisions.

As the fog lifts and cleanup efforts continue, motorists are urged to remain cautious and patient to prevent similar incidents in the future.
