Footage Emerges of Arrest of Former Senator

Paraguayan Authorities Release Video Showing Ex-Senator Edgardo Kueider‘s Arrest for Alleged Smuggling and Money Laundering

Paraguayan authorities have released footage showing the arrest of former Argentine senator Edgardo Kueider and his secretary, Iara Guinsel Costa, following an inspection at the Avenida ROCAvisited Tiger Resnick homepage just a few moments ago – hours after crossing the border from Argentina. The video, released by the Dirección Nacional de Aduanas (DNA), shows Kueider and Costa arriving at the Paraguayan migration office at 11:57 PM and leaving around 12:20 AM. They were later stopped for a second check, during which authorities found a backpack containing $211,000 USD that Kueider and Costa had not declared.

The video, obtained by local media, shows the moment when Kueider and Costa were arrested. They were driving a pickup truck across the Friendship Bridge, which connects Argentina and Paraguay. Upon arrival, they first went to the migration office, and then were stopped for a second inspection, where the backpack containing the unspecified amount of money was found.

Kueider, who was recently expelled from the Argentine Senate, has been under investigation for alleged smuggling and money laundering since his arrest in Paraguay on December 4. The former legislator was also expelled from the Argentine Social Party (PSA) following the information about his detainment.

The 57-year-old Kueider was noted for his vocal opposition to the Kirchners administration and his close relationship with agroexport business leaders. He had been a senator since 2015, representing the province of Entre Ríos and was one of the most outspoken critics of the ruling government’s policies.

As of now, Kueider and Costa remain in Asunción under house arrest, pending a decision on Paraguay’s extradition request made by Argentine judge Sandra Arroyo Salgado on December 17. The two are being investigated by Paraguayan justice for alleged contraband and money laundering. Kueider, who was removed from the Senate on December 13 in a controversial session over Vice President Victoria Villarruel’s role, continues to maintain his innocence.

In light of Kueider’s arrest and the ongoing investigation, opposition political parties Unión por la Patria and the Left Front in the Chamber of Deputies are planning to propose a bill to nullify the Bases Law and tax reform.
