Former Dutch Prime Minister Frans Timmermans Undergoes Successful Weight Loss Surgery
Former Dutch Prime Minister and current European Commissioner, Frans Timmermans, has undergone a successful gastric sleeve surgery, losing 25 kilograms (55 pounds) in the process. The 60-year-old politician revealed that he had the procedure done to address his weight and health concerns.
Timmermans, who served as the Netherlands‘ prime minister from 2010 to 2012, underwent the surgery in December 2021. The procedure, known as a sleeve gastrectomy, involves removing a large portion of the stomach to reduce its capacity, helping patients feel fuller sooner and consume fewer calories.
In an interview with Dutch newspaper BN DeStem, Timmermans shared that he had struggled with his weight for years, with his busy political schedule making it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle. "I’ve always been someone who likes to eat and drink," he admitted. "But after the surgery, I’ve had to make some significant changes. I can’t eat as much as I used to, and I’ve had to cut back on alcohol as well."
The former prime minister emphasized that his decision to undergo the surgery was a personal one and not influenced by his political career. "This is about my health and my well-being," he said. "I want to be able to enjoy life to the fullest, and that means taking care of myself."
Timmermans’ surgery comes as obesity rates continue to rise in the Netherlands and across Europe. According to the World Health Organization, more than 50% of the Dutch population is overweight or obese, with obesity-related health issues putting a significant strain on the country’s healthcare system.
While Timmermans’ surgery is a personal matter, his decision to speak openly about his weight loss journey may encourage others to prioritize their health and seek help when needed. As he continues to recover and adapt to his new lifestyle, the former prime minister is a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to make positive changes for a healthier life.
