Portas Questions New Lisbon Airport Cost Estimates, Calls for Thorough Analysis
In his weekly commentary, Paulo Portas expressed concern over the differing cost estimates for the new Lisbon airport, highlighting the disparity between the commission-independent’s €6 billion figure and the concessionaire ANA Aeroportos’ €9 billion estimate.
Portas believes the commission’s purpose is twofold: "to discard the Portela-Montijo solution, the most affordable one, by not renewing its environmental impact declaration," and "to push for the new airport in Alcochete at maximum cost."
With a significant difference in cost estimates, Portas advises a meticulous analysis. "The government must state its opinion on the ANA’s report by January 17, followed by six months for all entities to weigh in," he said. If in power, Portas would use these six months to identify cost reduction opportunities.
The government has acknowledged the need to evaluate the ANA’s report, aligning with Portas’ call for thorough analysis. The new airport’s cost uncertainty underscores the importance of transparent and rigorous assessment to ensure the project’s sustainability and feasibility.
