The Detroit automaker announced the exchange transfer on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. General Motors shares will continue trading on the NYSE under the symbol GM

GM Moves to Nasdaq for Tech Alignment
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson explained that the relocation aligns with the company’s growth trajectory and digital focus. GM’s customer-focused, technology-driven strategy is creating value for our stockholders, making Nasdaq a natural home for our listing as we grow,
Jacobson said in a release. He added that the company remains grateful for its long-standing partnership with the New York Stock Exchange and its remarkable legacy.
Beyond brand positioning, the transfer grants General Motors eligibility for potential inclusion in the Nasdaq-100 Index. According to Yahoo Finance, the decision reflects an ongoing corporate emphasis on technological milestones, such as surging recurring revenue for Super Cruise and artificial intelligence roadmap developments presented during a recent executive technology event.

General Motors Leaves NYSE After Century of Trading
The departure deals a notable loss for the NYSE. General Motors first listed its shares on the exchange in 1911. Following a government-backed bankruptcy, the automaker relisted on the exchange in 2010.
GM follows a roster of corporate icons that have left the NYSE for the historically technology-focused Nasdaq in recent years. Retail giant Walmart switched exchanges in December 2025, joining technology firms such as DoorDash and Palantir Technologies. Hilton Worldwide Holdings also announced a similar listing transfer last week.

Stockholders Keep Ticker During Exchange Move
Existing stockholders do not need to take any action regarding the transfer. The company confirmed that common stock par value $0.01 per share will maintain its current ticker symbol.
Shares of General Motors have more than doubled since 2024, closing Monday at $76.31 per share. The company commands a market capitalization of roughly $64.4 billion, according to market data.
