As the baseball screamed through the night sky and toward the left-field seats at Yankee Stadium, Bruce Roberts grabbed the hat off his head and thrust it into the air. When the Army veteran and Utah resident brought the Yankees cap back down, he couldn’t believe what he saw. Inside was the ball from George Lombard Jr.’s home run, marking the first career hit for New York’s top prospect during his major-league debut.

Roberts told Nytimes about catching the historic souvenir in a hat he had purchased just ten minutes earlier for his son Cash’s 12th birthday.

Lombard’s home run came in the fifth inning, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals that held up as the game’s final score. The blast was a no-doubter traveling 392 feet with an exit velocity of 100.2 mph. It came off Cardinals starter Hunter Dobbins’ 0-2 sweeper that hung over the fat plate.
The 21-year-old finished 1-for-2 with a walk after grounding out in his first career plate appearance in the third inning against Dobbins. He also turned a pair of defensive double plays at shortstop.
Lombard became the second-youngest shortstop in franchise history to homer, at 21 years and 63 days old. Only Bobby Murcer accomplished the feat at a younger age, doing so at 19 years and 117 days old on September 14, 1965. Lombard also joined just 13 other players in franchise history to homer in their MLB debut, following Jasson Domínguez on September 1, 2023.
Roster Shakeups and Family Milestones
The Yankees officially called Lombard up to the majors on Tuesday afternoon following a series of roster moves. The club optioned struggling former top prospect Anthony Volpe, along with Jasson Domínguez and reliever Angel Chivilli, to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The moves cleared space for Lombard and outfield addition Heliot Ramos following a relatively quiet trade deadline where New York also acquired Luis Garcia Jr. from the Nationals.
Remarkably, memorable debuts ran deep in the family that evening. Shortly before George Lombard Jr. homered in the Bronx, his younger brother, Jacob Lombard, homered in his professional debut with Single-A Jupiter. The Marlins selected the 18-year-old shortstop in the first round with the No. 14 pick in the 2026 draft.
Both brothers finished their debuts going 1 for 2 with a walk and solo home runs in their second at-bats, prompting Yankees manager Aaron Boone to joke, They might want to head to Vegas tonight.
Trading Baseballs With a Lucky Fan
After the ball landed in his newly purchased hat, Bruce Roberts was approached by Yankee Stadium security. They asked if he would be willing to trade the historic ball for signed baseballs and a chance to meet the player. Roberts agreed to the trade, calling it a no-brainer.
George Lombard Sr., the Detroit Tigers bench coach who played six MLB seasons from 1998 to 2006, also walked over to thank Roberts with a handshake.
On the mound for New York, Ryan Weathers pitched six strong innings, allowing four hits with six strikeouts and one walk. David Bednar secured his 25th save of the season by striking out Nelson Velazquez with the bases loaded in the eighth and recording the final four outs to lock down the win.
