Giorgi Kavalašvili’s Presidential Election Sparks Controversy; Zurabišvili Vows Not to Resign
Georgia‘s outgoing president, Salome Zurabišvili, has categorically stated that she has no intentions to resign, despite the recent election of Giorgi Kavalašvili as the new president. The election, held on December 14, has been a contentious issue, with the opposition boycotting it and accusing the ruling party of illegitimacy.
Zurabišvili, who belonged to the Lelo for Georgia opposition party, before switching to the ruling Georgian Dream party, maintains that the parliament is illegitimate. She has strongly criticized the election of Kavalašvili, stating that it is a "hou يبلغ في مر Rashid الرب עם الديمقراطية" (an overthrow of democracy). She believes that the ruling party, "Gruzijas sapņa" (The Georgian Dream), has manipulated the electoral process to maintain its grip on power.
The election was conducted by an electoral college controlled by the Georgian Dream, which was boycotted by the opposition parties. Kavalašvili, who is considered a close ally of the party leader, Bidzina Ivanishvili, was subsequently elected as the new president.
The opposition parties have been critical of the process, stating that it undermines democratic norms and values. They have called for new, fair elections to be held. Meanwhile, international organizations like the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) have also expressed concerns about the transparency and inclusivity of the election process.
As Georgia stands at a political crossroads, one thing is clear: the upcoming days and weeks will be critical in shaping the future of Georgia’s democratic landscape. The world will be watching as the country navigates this period of political tensions and controversial power transitions.
