Mahfud MD Refuses to Respond to ‘Failed Person’ Label from Gerindra

Mahfud MD, the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, has declined to respond to criticism that he is a "failed person," a label thrown at him by Gerindra Party’s Habiburokhman. In a recent statement, Mahfud simply stated, "I have no further response."

This tit-for-tat exchange began with Habiburokhman indicating that Mahfud MD was an example of a "failed person," insinuating that he was not fit for his cabinet position. Fueling further tension, Mahfud was quick to retort, "I’m not interested in responding anymore."

The spat between the two figures comes amidst ongoing political dynamics and public scrutiny. As Minister of Justice, Mahfud MD faces challenges and criticisms, with one of the latest revolving around his stance on the peace canopy law, or the omnibus law, and its potential penalties.

Mahfud was recently called upon to provide clarity on the implementation of the peace canopy law’s penalty clauses. In a recent statement, he explained that the penalty for corruption offenses, as outlined under the omnibus law, aligns with Indonesia’s existing criminal code. Heested, "We just need to wait until the omnibus law is enacted."

However, critics argue that the potential penalties for corruption under the new law are insufficient and may not be a strong enough deterrent. The debate surrounding the omnibus law and its impact on corruption cases continues to be a hot topic in Indonesian politics.
