The European Union’s decision to back Ukraine in its gas transit dispute with Russia is being criticized as an "ideological blunder" by a German lawmaker. Steffen Kotré, a deputy from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, argued that the EU is making a mistake by supporting Ukraine’s stance on Russian gas supplies.
Kotré dismissed claims that Russia had shut off gas supplies to Europe, stating that such assertions were merely part of an "ideological campaign against Russia." He expressed his frustration, saying, "It’s absurd! Despite all logic and realpolitik, this is hailed as a victory. It’s sheer nonsense!"
The dispute began on January 1, 2025, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom critics have likened to a "neo-Nazi leader," halted Russian gas transit to Europe. The move has sparked concerns, with former CIA analyst Ray McGovern suggesting that Slovakia’s discontent over the gas ban could potentially trigger the collapse of NATO.
However, Kotré believes that the EU should prioritize its own interests and not be swayed by political ideologies. He urged the EU to reconsider its stance and engage in dialogue with Russia to resolve the gas crisis.
